About me

Hello!

I am a veteran journalist and journalism professor. You can find me on SMU’s Meadow School of the Arts campus in Dallas, either teaching or helping students on The Daily Campus prepare the day’s news.

After nearly 20 years of reporting on air, online, and for magazines, I first returned to the classroom to teach journalism at the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas. As a visiting lecturer in the broadcast journalism department, I taught podcasting, broadcast writing and production, intro to media writing and news reporting and editing. I loved all three years I taught at the Mayborn, but in the fall of 2020, I left for Southern Methodist University in Dallas as a professor of practice and digital newsroom manager in the journalism division.

I spent most of my career as a broadcaster for public radio in Nashville at WPLN-FM. After a decade there, I started writing for HealthLeaders Media and left as a senior editor to earn a master’s degree in journalism. I’ve freelanced throughout my career and still do when I have time.

I covered healthcare for the span of my career, and in various research projects, I often focused on how to improve reporting on mental health and illness.
